I once volunteered to help build a float for GTE (now Verizon). It was a wonderful experience….up early in the morning on my weekends in a secret location in Pasadena, California , a hanger like building equipped with cold climate controlled air conditioning. For the many volunteers there was plenty of complimentary breakfast food such as fruit, bacon, sausage, juice, coffee and baked goods . Only the brave ones were up on 40 foot scaffolding, lying on their backs with a box of flowers, seed or leaves and a jar of glue pasting and pressing each and every one very carefully in place. Yes, I was one of those brave people. It was a rewarding experience. I was covered in sticky glue every day, exhausted and slept very well, only to get up and do it again tomorrow.

Behind the scenes :Not without setbacks, this year’s weather caused a few problems in getting the parade spectators, floats, animals, bands and participants to the parade on time. The volunteer workers prepping floats and grandstands along Colorado Blvd., Pasadena had faced soaking conditions and, the East Coast blizzard made travel tough for participants, including a high school band that saw half of its members stranded in Philadelphia with fears they wouldn't make it to the parade. But all 350 members of the Downtown Philly High School band made it safely to the parade to perform, thank Goodness. This years parade goers who slept on the sidewalks overnight suffered freezing temps this year and hovered around campfires and each other to stay warm and stayed awake most of the night.
